Valdicava, one of the most sought-after Brunello producers, puts together another incredible bottle of wine. Scoring 97pts by James Suckling (formerly of the Wines Spectator), and 94pts by Wine Enthusiast, the Valdicava 2006 Brunello di Montalcino is already proving to be another winner!
Scores for the 2006 Brunello wines are coming in slowly, but here's what James Suckling had to say about the vintage in general...
"The wines [2006 Brunellos] are subtle, yet rich, structured, and powerful. This vintage is the new benchmark for the region — a modern 1997.
When you first taste these reds, you think that they are balanced and approachable with beautiful perfumes of cherries and flowers, along with refined palates of ripe tannins and rich fruit. If you give them a little air, they start to show their muscular structure of powerful tannins and fresh acidity. These are wines that need a minimum of three to four years of bottle age before opening, but they will improve with age for decades to come.
I have spoken to a number of the top Brunello producers in Montalcino, and they deem the 2006 their best ever. ... The growing season for 2006 was much more consistent with hot days and cool nights; in 2007, there were more heat spikes. This more stable weather as the grapes ripen is perfect for Sangiovese — the grape used in Brunello.
In fact, I found…when tasting these 2006 Brunellos…They change all the time in the glass, from being very aromatic and clean and almost timid, to full, rich and tannic. They are fascinating to taste. They are some of the most interesting young Brunellos I have ever tasted since I first started going to Montalcino in 1983."

Wine Advocate
The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino flows with gorgeous layers of dark red fruit. This is one of the more muscular, virile wines of the vintage. Slow to reveal its character, the Valdicava Brunello will require significant patience, but I have seen the wine blossom beautifully, even in the smallest of vintages. A blast of iron, smoke, tar, licorice and new leather inform the deep, intense finish. This is a hugely promising, brilliant Brunello from proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese, but it needs to be buried in the cellar for at least a few years. Readers who can't wait should open the wine a few hours in advance, which will allow the fruit to emerge. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Wine Spectator
Though rich and round, the cherry, black currant and violet flavors in this Brunello are pure and focused. This is beautifully textured, displaying bright acidity and refined tannins that drive the long mineral aftertaste. Best from 2012 through 2025.

Wine Enthusiast
Rich and complex with a long aging future ahead, this beautiful Brunello from Valdicava offers tight, crisp acidity, solid tannins and a bouquet that is richly packed with black fruit, cherry, spice and tobacco aromas. Pair this wine with succulent cuts of beef.

James Suckling
I rate wines using the 100-points scale. I have used this point system for close to 25 years. I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
